When friends come to visit
Last weekend we had the privilege of having Canaan's birth siblings and birth mom over for dinner. This was the first time in a year we had seen them, after they had lived with us for a year while their mom and dad worked things out in their lives.
I waited until the last minute to tell the kids they were coming because I didn't want them to be disappointed and when I told them, you would have thought someone famous was coming to visit. They kept saying, "I can't wait any longer! When will they be here?"
My oldest said it perfectly when she stated, "Time flies but love stays." Our experience with these kiddos and their Mama have set us on a course that we can not change as we plunge forward with foster care placements. We understand that to love kids, we need to choose to love their parents too. It's so important for the kids even while it seems scary to us foster parents/adoptive parents. I would encourage you to change your perspective about the biological parents. Love them. Right where they are at. Love them. Encourage them to be better people. Teach them. Give them HOPE. As you walk along side their kids and love them, walk alongside the bio parents too. I promise you that you will not regret it, if your heart is in the right place.
Saying all that, you need to know that it has taken me a LONG time to see this perspective. A. Long. Time. I made so many mistakes. I chose poorly with my words many times. I didn't see them as Christ sees them. I'm ashamed of that. It's not who I want to be and not who Christ called me to be.
So, our relationship with our new placements biological parents has just begun. Its awkward but simple. They obviously love their children. They have begun to go to church with us on Sunday mornings. It's so awesome and crazy. The kiddos are slated to return to them and it leaves us with the question of what kind if relationship will continue. With the kids in the picture above, it was easy as they are Canaan's birth moms kids. We have a very open adoption with her so we knew that even though they left to a poor situation with their birth father, we would see them again. With these kids, it has to be more intentional and specific. If you have any advice of how to go from here, please say so! We are considering inviting them for Christmas and possibly Thanksgiving too. That's a lot! However, when the kids see that we have a relationship with their parents, it sets them at ease a bit.
Adding so many "extras" to your family makes things pretty crazy but the blessings are pretty crazy too!

Five Years Old
This precious, God-given blessing is now five. He is a sweet, funny and precocious little man whom we all adore! He is also very talented as he blew out 3 of his birthday candles on the inhale!

On birth mom's
This is such a sweet picture to me. This is Canaan smiling at a song his birth mom, Nika, played for him before she said goodbye.
This is going to be a very vulnerable post for me to write. I have so many thoughts swirling around in my head and I hope I can write them down effectively.
My idea of birth moms did not start off very well. Without sharing details, the girls' birth mom was filled with hatred against us no matter how hard we tried to be kind and keep her updated on her girls' lives. When we found out about our infertility and decided to go the adoption route, birth mom's scared us silly. Open adoptions were fairly new to our way of thinking and as we sat through the meetings and continued to hear this term, we were adamant we would only do the bare minimum in sending letters and pictures. This was a decision and position filled with FEAR. It wasn't about what was good for the child and it certainly wasn't thinking about what was best for the birth mom. It was about US and our grief over our infertility and not wanting to share OUR child with someone else. As I write that it looks so silly! Without a birth mom's choice to GIVE us her child we would be childless! Anyways...
When we got the call that Malakai had been born we had only an hour to decide whether we wanted this baby boy to be ours. It was crazy! Kai's birth mom only wanted updates through letters and pictures sent to the ministry we used and she would pick them up periodically. It was "perfect". When we brought Malakai home and fell in love with him I wanted SO badly to show this beautiful boy off to the woman that chose life for him and my letters gave little details about the little boy he was becoming. For whatever reason, when Kai was about one, she decided to stop picking up the packages, wouldn't leave an address and changed all her numbers so that the ministry contact could no longer get ahold of her. For a while, I was a little happy. I was glad there wasn't going to be any competition but after a short time the craziest thing began to happen. I was SAD that this woman was missing out on our sons life. I was SAD that Kai would not have access to her to write her a letter or see what she looked like.
Isaiah and Judah's birth mom was dying when she walked 2 days through the bush to bring them to the orphanage. Her husband had died when she was pregnant with Judah and she had a difficult decision to make. My heart broke for her! Yet another woman choosing life for her children because she LOVED them. No selfishness involved but MUCH heartache and tears, to be sure. God was softening my heart(and weeding out the selfishness) to appreciate the sacrifice and love these women had in choosing to place their children.
The woman who seriously changed my idea about birth moms was Justus' birth mom, Shanna. We were not looking to adopt again so soon after Liberia but she asked to meet us, so we went. She was funny and open and personable. After that first meeting she knew she wanted us to be Justus' parents but WE had to decide if this decision was right for us( there was a lot of legal stuff involved and it was a hard adoption and we weren't sure it was the right timing). She wanted phone calls and letters and pictures and that was a lot more than what we had done before, I wasn't sure I wanted to talk on the phone or have Justus talking on the phone.
I got a phone call one day from Shanna and she said simply, "Listen to this." As I listened, my sons heart beat through the phone and I started crying. Amazing. Then she handed the phone to the doctor so she could tell me how things were going with the baby and Shanna, just as if I were in the room. Through her hard decision she was thinking about ME. I felt normal somewhat. I had heard my babies heartbeat before birth, just like any other mom. Normal. Shanna made that happen.
Miraculously, we were able to attend the birth and be IN the room when Justus was born. It was THE most amazing thing I have EVER experienced watching my child come into this world and take his first breath. It was something I never thought I would get to experience and it was so, so precious. Then, after Shanna had held Justus and cuddled him and nursed him(all things we had agreed on) she turned to me, looked me in my eyes and said, "Would you like to hold your son?" The following day I saw the grief, heartache and pain that came with a birth mom saying goodbye. I was crushed. I was broken. I was torn. Such sadness to contend with from one woman and yet such happiness and joy I felt at a son being born!
As the weeks drew on Shanna and I talked on the phone often. She loved how content Justus always was when she called. We talked about Justus and our lives and we became friends. Those phone calls eventually ended as she moved on with her life but we still keep in touch periodically. Today Shanna and I are Facebook friends, she is married and there is such comfort in knowing that if Justus wants to know more about her, all I have to do is send her a FB message. It comforts me that I can give that to Justus. He knows what Shanna looks like. He knows that he is a exact male replica(it's crazy!) of his biological sister. He knows he has 3 1/2 brothers who looks like 3 of his brothers. He KNOWS.
You see, Malakai and Isaiah are at that age where they are wondering more. There is very little I can tell them. No picture to show. They hurt over it and, because of that, I hurt. I have found Malakai's birth mom on FB but hesitate to contact her. She has her reasons why she cut contact. I tell Kai it was because it was too hard for her. I tell him that she knew he was safe and taken care of and that was good enough for her but... I really don't know.
And now we come to Nika, Canaan's birth mom. This young woman has had a hard life. When she fell pregnant with Canaan she truly had no other choice than to place him. She had no job, no where to live, nothing. The foster care system had left her without anything and at 22 she was still struggling to make something out of nothing. I honestly, to this day, don't understand why she chose us as her family. She says it was because she thought having lots of brothers and sisters would be fun. She says she wanted white parents because those were always the nicest foster parents she had. It still boggles my mind a little. I think it's because God knew that this young woman would be sanctifying to ME. I have come to love this woman for who she is, despite the fact that her life is FAR different than mine has ever been. I have chosen to make her a part of my life and she calls me when she is desperate. I have done everything I can to be there for her. I care about her deeply.
Nika changed EVERY single conception I had about birth moms. Her choice was one of the hardest of all. She was not supported. Her friends and community ostracized her and was angry at her decision. They said some VERY mean and hurtful things to her and still do after TWO years. They really don't understand. And yet, she still chose life. She still chose the best for Canaan. In the beginning I saw Nika often. It was hard for me, I won't lie. The adoption wasn't final and there is always a sense of vulnerability when that is the case. She has made some really bad decisions in the last 2 years and it is hard for me to watch. However, we have built up a relationship where I can tell her TRUTH and she won't run away.
Most of all I know that the periodic times we get together are building GOOD things in Canaan. There will be no questions that will go unanswered because I was finally willing to step out of my comfortable box and be a little uncomfortable for a while. I thought it would be forever, honestly, but it's not! Nika and I are meeting this coming Tuesday and I am EXCITED for it for the first time ever. There is no worry or stress involved. I want to see her, talk to her and give her a hug. After all, that is the LEAST I can do for her after the priceless gift she gave to me, right? I've come a long way in the last 8 1/2 years. If you are an adoptive mom, learn from my mistakes, you're child/ren will be better for it.

Finger coils
I had forgotten how much easier finger coils are than double strand twists. This took me all of an hour and 15 minutes. Canaan sat straight through in his high chair eating snacks and watching the movie the big kids were. I was very surprised. He started fussing on my last row and it got finished quickly. Yeah!

Canaan's new do and other things
Total photo bomb ahead. Just warning you.
I finally decided that this poor baby needed a new hairdo to help keep him from the pain of combing his hair out each day. He hated it. So, in went some double strand twists and I LOVE them. I love his hair in a fro, and I won't keep them in twists all the time, but for the most part this is how they will stay. It is so much more manageable and so cute this way!
I will tell you though, that this makes me want a little AA girl really, really bad. There are so many things that you can't do with a little boys hair that you can do with a little girls. I found out a few weeks ago that the state has no restrictions on independent adoptions in regards to rooms so I guess we aren't "out of the pool" like I thought we were. Not that we are looking or seeking at all, but it does allow God to work if He sees fit.
On another note, Canaan has been having a learning boom this past week. He learned how to clap, play peek-a-boo, wave, say "uh-oh" and "Papa", stand for more than 2 seconds and even took 2 consecutive steps today. I wonder how soon it will be before he starts actually walking. Amazing that he is old enough already.

11 months
This squishy, wrinkly, itsy-bitsy baby is now 11 months old and, without a doubt, the most pleasant and happy baby I have had. He still is not sleeping through the night, despite my best efforts, as he keeps getting sick and then all the good we've accomplished in the sleeping arena goes down hill. Honestly, I don't mind too much as I know that sooner, rather than later, the cuddle time I enjoy will end.
He pushed through his top 2 teeth without even a care due to our new Baltic Amber necklace from Inspired By Finn. I was always very skeptical but, for Canaan, it worked like a dream. I figured I was only out $25 if it didn't work but it has and I am pleased.
Canaan is cruising around everything and gaining his balance without holding on to things. He's not super close to walking yet(of which I'm glad) but he is beginning to figure it out. The kids are enamored with his progress and think he is the smartest baby in the world because he can stand up, cruise, crawl around, you name it.
He is still only saying "Dada" but he can sign "hi", bye-bye"(yes they are the same) and "more". I have seen him a handful of times assert his will and throw a little "baby tantrum" at something he didn't like. It is usually because I am not feeding him fast enough. He does, however, respond really well to telling him "no" when he goes to touch something he shouldn't and is easily redirected.
His chubby cheeks, arms and legs are the perfect rolly-polly goodness to kiss and squeeze. I love chubby babies. Canaan is now just an ounce shy of 23 pounds. You should see a chubby little baby dancing to music, it's one of the cutest things ever!
Pictures of the 11 month old Canaan will be added, for your viewing pleasure, sometime this week. I hope;)

A first
Daddy gave Canaan his chocolate bunny from the grandparents, against my better judgment. I actually wasn't even paying attention and when I turned around my 10 month old had this huge chocolate sugar concoction in his hands. He was enjoying it A LOT so I didn't have the heart to take it away from him right away.

On a completely seperate note, HOW cute is my baby boy?! In my estimation, he is THE cutest little 10 month old boy on the planet. You may disagree with me, but you'd be wrong ;)

My baby
This sweet little baby is not so little anymore. He is coming up on TEN months old and weighs in at just under 21 lbs. His big brother, Justus, only weighs 9 more pounds than he does. I love chubby babies:)
Canaan is now crawling on all 4's and is starting to go pretty fast. He loves to chase the kids around the kitchen and will laugh and squeal trying to get them. Right now, he is trying SO hard to stand up on anything he can. Yesterday, he successfully pulled himself up on a kitchen stool and then promptly fell over.
Because of this beautiful weather we are having(which is supposed to end tonight in snow) Canaan got his first taste of playing in the dirt. He didn't like it too much and would try to start crawling but then push back on his bottom to sit when his hands touched the ground. For a minute, he would whine and look at me and then try again. He finally just conceded to sit in the dirt and play with leaves and sticks and had a lot of fun with that.
Breastfeeding is still going strong, although Canaan gets most of his nutrition from table food(avocados are his favorite), he really loves nursing. I am so glad that he has no showing of wanting to wean any time soon.
Canaan says Dada for everything right now but he does know that Jonah is Dada. When Jonah walks in the room he will get a big smile on his face and say "Dada". When I tell him, "Canaan, say 'Mama'" he gets a smile on his face and says, "Dada". It's almost like he knows he's being a stinker. It's OK, I can wait, I hear Mama, Mom, Mommy all day long from 6 other little stinkers.
Life is good. Life is busy. I am thoroughly enjoying this stage of life right now as my children are getting older. Have a great day!
You can see his 2 teeth he worked hard at pushing through. Just look at those cheeks. I kiss them at least 500 times a day:)

Just in case you ever wondered...

This little man is adored. He is loved and cherished and coddled and fussed over by every. single. one. of his siblings.
Every morning Canaan sleeps in until about 8:30 or so and the rest of us have been getting things started for our home schooling day. Every ear is tuned for the sound of Canaan talking. The first one to hear him will yell, "Canaan's awake!"
I go pick him up out of his crib, talk to him a little while and kiss his amazingly, fat, scrumptious, chubby baby cheeks then walk into the other room. When I enter the main room and the kids see their baby they come running(yes, they call him "their" baby and tell strangers this all the time). I have to kneel down on the floor while 6kids kiss and ooo and ahhh over their baby brother.
Justus says in his high-pitched for-baby-only-voice, "I wuv you Canaan. I'm your big brudder, yep, I your big brudder and I love you!" Then he smothers his face with kisses. Judah holds Canaan's hand and tries to get Canaan to look at him so he can talk to him and tell him how much he loves him and how cute he is. Isaiah fawns all over the baby and asks multiple times when he can hold and play with him. Malakai uses his high-pitched baby voice and says, "You're cute Canaan! Your cute! Yes, you are!" Sarah gives him a kiss and stands back to wait until the other kids have backed off to continue their chores and then steps in to pick him up, go sit on the couch and talk with him for a little bit. Alana usually joins her there to kiss Canaan and watch him.
Canaan smiles his amazing, dimpled smile and my heart melts every single time.
If God ever chooses to bless us with another baby, one thing I don't ever have to worry about is whether or not these children will be OK with it. They already know what a great blessing and how much fun babies are. As Malakai says, "Mommy, I want you to have 100 more babies like Canaan."

These children

These children make my heart swollen with love.

These children are pieces of my heart in human form. Sigh.

These children will never understand what a gift they are to me. Ever.

These children make me smile. They make me happy. They make me laugh.

And this baby? Oh my! Look at that face! And that hair! There are no words.

Life in bullets
Canaan is 5 months old and just as cute as can be!
He is a chubby, smiley, happy baby and we continue to adore him.
The day he turned 5 months old I felt he needed a bit more than what I was producing and so I started giving him 2 oz. of formula in the evenings.
The day he turned 5 months old he started sleeping really well at night.
We have all been sick for the past few weeks which has kept us away from church. Of course, this happens right when the series is something we were really excited to hear.
I just turned 33.
33 is really old, according to my 6 year old who is afraid I might just die of old age sometime really soon.
My parents, brother, sister-in-love and niece are coming for Christmas.
It's my brother and his families first time seeing our land and house.
It will be our first Christmas in our new house with 14 people in our tiny 1200 sq ft. Not to mention my in-laws will be joining us the day of, so make that 16.
We are imagining a warm, crackling fire, coffee, peace and quiet in the middle of the forest.
I think we may be a bit crazy that that may happen with 8 children in the house, 7 of whom are under 7.
Did I mention my brother and parents are coming for Christmas? I'm really excited.
Did I also mention that there will be 6 adults and 8 children in a 1200 sq ft. house for 4 days?
After having serious knee problems for the past 2 years I finally decided to go get it checked out.(btw, I have had 2 knee surgeries 15 years ago)
I have a lateral meniscus tear that will probably need surgery. Fun, right?
For the first time I will be doing all of Thanksgiving by myself.
It will just be Jonah and I and the kids this year so there's not so much pressure to make everything perfect.
It is a week before Thanksgiving and I haven't even given thought to what I am making.
Maybe I'll make enchiladas.
I like to live on the edge.

Canaan's new hat
It's the first ear flap hat I've done and the first time I've used this kind of yarn.
I think it turned out pretty good and I just love how his cute little curls come out the back a bit. See how nice a warm his ears are gonna be this winter?
He seems to like his hat too.
On a side note, couldn't you just eat those cute little cheeks all up? I try every single day. Gosh, I love this little baby.

4 months old
Today, Canaan is 4 months old. He is the most played with "toy" around this house and is often fought over who gets to hold him. The kids favorite game is "get-Canaan-to-smile-and-laugh" and he LOVES them all. Nothing else can compare to him and his sweet smile.
As for me? I am SO in love with this baby boy. It's kind of silly but every time I know we're expecting a new little baby I always worry a little bit if I will love this one as much as my others. God definitely made love to grow and expand with each coming blessing.
This babyhood is so precious to me in ways none of my other's have been. I know that, unless God blesses us with a miracle pregnancy, this baby will be my last for many, many years because of state restrictions that we are already pushing over the limit now. We don't know when we are going to begin building the new house and, until that's done, we would not be able to get an approved homestudy. I'm actually surprised we got one this time, to be honest.
So, each day, when I wake up to see Canaan's smiling face I savor each moment I can with this little man I love so much. Yes, he's growing up SO fast but I am really enjoying it!

Smiles are hard to come by
Oh Mother, the silly things you do to get me to smile are so juvenile.
Well, I love you enough to oblige you just a bit.
Oh, you want more? If I smile will you stop with the silly antics?
There you go. Are you happy now?
Oh, yes son. That smile melts my heart and I will act like a fool for hours just to see it again.
